I love these kinds of movies. Documentaries about things that some people would think are lame, are interesting to me. The King Of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters is about the “cutthroat world of Donkey Kong.” It is an almost unbelievable look into the world of people who take “classic video games” too seriously. The star of the movie though, is Steve Wiebe, who is a normal enough and nice seeming dude who just has a knack for Donkey Kong and gets caught up in trying to set the record that was set by Billy Mitchell, who is considered the greates gamer of all time or something.
Now, Billy Mitchell is a character. He is unexplainable. He obviously thinks he is the greatest thing in the world because he got to the end of Pac Man, the dude has an epic hairspray/mullet/early 1980′s hairdo going on, with a terrifically groomed beard & mustache. I’ve seen him before somewhere, maybe on some Discovery Channel show or something.
The rivalry between Steve Wiebe and Billy Mitchell in this movie, along with the other real-life characters, make this interesting and hilarious.
